Sweating a lot can be an embarrassing problem but it could be linked to a condition known as hyperhidrosis. This is nothing to be ashamed of and may be helped through the use of hyperhidrosis deodorant.

But choosing the best deodorant for excessive sweating can require some research. I want to stress that not all deodorants will stop you from sweating; it is important to look for an antiperspirant.

I’ve been trying out some different brands and decided to put together a list of my top 10 best deodorants for heavy sweating so far. Using these might be the key to preventing those uncomfortable wet marks.

What Deodorant Is Best For Hyperhidrosis (Excessive Sweating)

A healthy adult will typically sweat when they are exposed to excessive heat or physical activity. It’s our body’s way of cooling down. However, there is a medical condition known as hyperhidrosis that causes heavy sweating, even when the person is at rest or their body temperature is normal.

The concern with people who suffer from this condition is that excessive sweating is seen as unattractive and unhygienic. Let me reassure you that it is neither of those things. In fact, there are some situations where hyperhidrosis can be a sign of an underlying condition so it’s always best to see your doctor who may be able to provide treatment.

But one of the main things we’re trying to achieve is to limit the symptoms of heavy sweating, through the use of deodorants. It’s crucial to choose a deodorant that acts as an antiperspirant as this will prevent sweating rather than just masking the odor.

I’ll share with you my current preferred top ten antiperspirants for hyperhidrosis.

1. SweatBlock Antiperspirant Deodorant

The Sweatblock Max Clinical System consists of a stick deodorant and a packet of deodorant wipes. Using this product has significantly reduced my excessive sweating and bad odor.

It offers a two-pronged attack to sweat. I use the wipe before bed and then rinse the area in the morning before applying the deodorant.

I think this is a brilliant option for those with sensitive skin since the deodorant contains no nasties like parabens or sulfates yet I feel it’s incredibly strong and effective. I also like that it’s cruelty-free.

2. Blu Atlas Deodorant

A lot of hyperhidrosis deodorants I have come across so far contain aluminum, but Blue Atlas does not. The deodorant is bursting with natural ingredients like bamboo and volcanic ash so it should be really kind to the skin. Despite all of this I found that the deodorant was impressively effective.

In fact, I think Blue Atlas is one of the best antiperspirants for hyperhidrosis and I’m not alone in this either, as most user feedbacks they have are very positive.

I love this one for active sessions such as working out at the gym which can normally get pretty sweaty. I find that Blue Atlas tackles sweat perfectly in these situations and gives off a fresh scent. I even use it all over my body, not just on the underarms. I love how versatile it is.

3. Lume Deodorant

I think I’m addicted to Lume. Its ingredients are 100% natural and they come in a delicious range of fragrances. Personally, I love the coconut scent. For anyone that wants an unscented alternative, Lume has this as well.

I’m getting the cream stick that is free from phthalates, parabens, aluminum and baking soda. It does an excellent job of tackling my sweat effectively.

Besides the deodorant, there’s also an antiperspirant lotion. When I use them together, I can tackle sweat in any area and it’ll be super kind to my skin, leaving it feeling soft, moisturized, and sweat-free.

4. Duradry 3-Step System

For anyone like me suffering from seriously excessive sweating, a three-step approach like Duradry may be the answer. Their kit contains deodorant, antiperspirant gel, and body wash each specifically designed for use at different times of the day in the ongoing battle against sweat.

When I start using the product every day, it’ll help me gain control of my sweat problem within as little as a week. Some reported having these results in as little as three days, however, my case was different.

I found Duradry to be mildly scented and certainly not overpowering. While I can still smell it on my skin hours after application, it certainly isn’t going to offend anyone.

I should point out that Duradry probably isn’t the best for sensitive skin. Some of the ingredients can make the skin feel itchy. Although in my opinion this usually clears up after a few days.

5. Mitchum Deodorant

Mitchum is a USA-produced antiperspirant-deodorant brand that helps tackle wetness and odor. It’s one of the more affordable deodorants on my list yet they sweat block effectively.

What I like is that they have options for both scented and unscented deodorants and they come in sprays and sticks. I personally find that the stick is the better option for hyperhidrosis as it’s alcohol-free and dries really quickly.

I like that they don’t leave white marks or stains easily and I found them good at keeping my clothes clean. I found the gel formula also gentle on the skin and did not experience any irritation. One thing to keep in mind is that it contains aluminum so it is not a natural product.

6. Certain Dri Prescription Strength

If you don’t like the way that fragranced deodorants mix with your sweat then this unscented alternative may be worth trying. The fact that doctors recommend it gives me a certain amount of confidence. I’ve found it to have worked well in reducing my sweating.

If you want to make the most out of the deodorant I recommend applying it at night to allow it to do its job. I don’t recommend applying this one immediately after a shower.

Certain Dri contains 12% aluminum. Nevertheless, finding a hyperhidrosis deodorant without aluminum is difficult, since this component is what makes antiperspirants work.

While I find the deodorant very effective, I do regret that it is only for the underarms. I will not be able to use it to treat the excessive sweating on my hands and feet, for example.

7. Gillette Clinical Antiperspirant

Gillette is a brand that everyone knows, so I expected that its clinical antiperspirant would deliver.

One of the things I appreciate the most about the Gillette line is that I have such a diverse range of scents to choose from. It’s well designed to tackle sweat throughout the day, and applying once before bed is sufficient for me I found. That said, I noticed they have lower levels of aluminum inside compared to others. That’s probably why I won’t get as much protection out of it as I would with something like Duradry or Perspirex which I’ll talk about next.

8. Perspirex Plus Antiperspirant

Perspirex Plus Antiperspirant

Perspirex came highly recommended by someone I know that has the same complaints as me and I must say that I was very happy with the overall outcome.

One of the things that stands out to me is how well it reduces my odor. When I apply the product at night and then rinse it off in the morning I get even up to a couple of days of sweat control.

What I also like about Perspirex is that the creators put a lot of emphasis on maintaining healthy skin. I sometimes find that these intense clinical strength antiperspirants can be irritating but since this one contains a buffer, it’s a lot kinder to the skin. Although there is a slightly higher concentration of aluminum at 15%.

Perspirex is non-scented but if you prefer a more scented feel then I’d just recommend using a scented deodorant on top of it.

9. Maxim Antiperspirant Roll-On

Maxim Antiperspirant Roll On

Maxim is an unscented unisex antiperspirant that comes in roll-on form. The product will block sweat and absorb any that comes through and is effective for up to seven days, as they claim.

This isn’t a natural product and contains 15% aluminum but that’s why it’s so effective. And I have complete faith in the brand since they’ve been developing hyperhidrosis deodorants for two decades and are recommended by dermatologists so I am confident it’ll be gentle on your skin.

That said, some people have reported mild itching in the minutes after application. But I noticed that there’s a sensitive skin option, for those who need it.

I found this a great deodorant I could use for other areas of my body aside from my armpits. If you suffer from excessive sweating on the hands, groin, feet or anywhere else, the deodorant is kind enough to use all over.

10. Carpe Antiperspirant Hand Lotion

A majority of the deodorant products for hyperhidrosis are aimed at the underarms but this lotion works for the hands, where I tend to sweat heavily.

For me, I have quite sensitive hands, so I love that the Carpe hand lotion is non-irritating and gentle on my hands. But it’s super effective against hyperhidrosis. I believe in the product because it’s been developed in collaboration with US dermatologists.

The lotion hydrates and nourishes well, making my hands super soft. It contains all-natural ingredients and has a light, uplifting eucalyptus fragrance that leaves my hands feeling fresh.

What Is Hyperhidrosis

Hyperhidrosis is a medical condition that must be diagnosed by a healthcare professional. So, if you suffer from excessive sweating, don’t feel bad or as though it’s something you have control over because it’s not.

Hyperhidrosis is the medical term for heavy or excessive sweating which occurs despite a lack of external factors. Usually, we will sweat when we work out or when we’re in a hot environment but individuals with hyperhidrosis will sweat regardless of the current conditions.

With hyperhidrosis, much of the sweating occurs on the hands and feet but it’s also common in the armpits, the face, the chest, and the groin.

The good news is that hyperhidrosis is not a dangerous condition. For all intents and purposes, it won’t have a negative impact on your physical health. However, the stress of managing excessive sweating can be burdensome and may affect the mental health of the sufferer.

It’s not uncommon for people with hyperhidrosis to avoid physical activity, avoid physical contact, and feel constantly anxious. All of these things can impact their quality of life. If you feel as though your sweating is having a negative impact on your life then it may be time to speak to a doctor.

There is no one common cause for hyperhidrosis. It could be triggered by hormonal changes during pregnancy or menopause or it may be down to low blood pressure. There are even some medications that can cause excess sweating but your healthcare professional will be able to diagnose you and find the root cause.

In primary hyperhidrosis, the excessive sweating happens on its own whereas with secondary hyperhidrosis, it occurs due to an underlying health condition.

Choosing A Good Deodorant For Hyperhidrosis

No two of us are the same and that’s not a bad thing. Nevertheless, it also means that while one hyperhidrosis deodorant works well for me, it may not perform the same for you. That’s why I’d recommend taking the following factors into account when choosing the best antiperspirant for heavy sweating.

First, you’ll want to think about the type of deodorant you’re buying. Do you need a spray, a stick, or a roll on? Roll on deodorants tent to be better for sensitive skin as they usually contain less aluminum. A lot of deodorants will also contain moisturizers that will soothe the skin as well as protect against sweat.

Stick deodorants are brilliant if you want something quick and easy to use. They can be wiped on in seconds and are instantly dry. Unlike a roll-on which needs time to dry before you can put your clothes on. If you’re always in a rush in the mornings, a stick is probably the way to go. However, these are the worst culprits for clumping so make sure you apply sparingly.

Finally, there are sprays or aerosols which again are brilliant if you want something quick drying. There are a lot of sprays that won’t leave white marks on your clothes. However, you have to consider that the spray mist can get down your throat and might not be suitable for people with breathing difficulties or for use in confined spaces.

Another thing to think about when choosing a hyperhidrosis deodorant is the scent. As we have seen in my list of deodorants, these antiperspirants come in a whole range of scents. One thing I’ve noticed is that certain scents don’t mix well with my sweat. This does mean some trial and error but I generally find that fresh, uplifting scents do the best at masking the smell.

Earlier, I mentioned that some deodorants contain aluminum. Those that contain aluminum are generally better at stopping sweat from reaching the surface of the skin whereas those without are primarily designed to mask the odor caused by sweat.

However, if you have sensitive skin, aluminum-based products could cause irritation so it’s always best to test them prior to use.

There has been a concern that using aluminum-based antiperspirants could cause cancer owing to the fact that they stop you from sweating out toxins. But there’s no real evidence around this and it’s actually the job of your liver and kidneys to rid the body of toxins, not your sweat glands.

That said, there has been some research to suggest that aluminum in high amounts could affect how well the body produces estrogen. But I wouldn’t worry too much since further studies have shown that simply using deodorant doesn’t expose you to a concerning amount of the compound.

One final thing to consider is whether commercially produced deodorants are strong enough to manage your condition successfully. While the antiperspirants I have talked about in my guide are all very effective, there are cases of hyperhidrosis that require prescription products.

If you find that, after using one of the best deodorants for excessive sweating, you still have a problem, you may need to see your doctor for a prescribed product.

How Many Swipes Of Deodorant Should You Use

It can be very tempting to layer deodorant as if it’s going out of fashion but there’s really no need to go over the top. If you’re using a quality antiperspirant then it should prevent sweating with just a couple of swipes.

If you’re using more than two or three swipes of a deodorant stick, you’re not applying it correctly.

Deodorant sticks come in solid or gel form and you can also get roll-on products. All of these require no more than two to three swipes to cover the entire armpit. The key is to make sure you cover all of the area rather than just wiping it in one spot.

If you’ve chosen a spray deodorant then the two-to-three rule applies again. Only this time, you’ll shake the can and spray it over the entire armpit for two to three seconds. That’s more than enough.

When you apply too much deodorant then you aren’t going to get a boosted effect. All you’ll achieve is marking your clothes with white stains and finding little clumps of deodorant on the skin. Not to mention, you’ll spend more money on antiperspirants because you’re wasting them.

It’s best to apply your deodorant as part of your morning and night routine. For most people, this should be enough to get them through the day comfortably. However, if you notice that things are starting to get a little stinky, it’s OK to reapply. For the best results, I’d recommend first washing the area to remove bacteria which cause the smell and then applying a fresh layer of deodorant.
