By the Fireplace by Replica is an iconic fragrance that designer Maison Martin Margiela formulated. This fragrance features smoky notes of guaiac wood mixed with aromatic spices and a smooth vanilla heart. If you love it but can’t find a bottle of it, I have compiled a list of fragrances that embody the essence of this classic winter fragrance.

What We Are Looking For In A Replica By the Fireplace Dupe

By the Fireplace by Replica smells like a warm winter campfire on a crisp, clear night. Its base features balsam woodiness and middle notes of aromatic spices, chestnut, and pink pepper. It’s a perfect fragrance to wear during cooler fall and winter months. Whichever fragrance you choose, it should invoke feelings of wintertime or crisp evenings sipping a warm drink by a bonfire.

Most dupes will contain a formulation that features vanilla or orange blossom top notes, followed closely by pink pepper, chestnut, or other similar spices. The dry down should be cozy, soft, and slightly feminine with hints of cashmere or even musk. Most importantly, there should be a smoky element that runs throughout the wear. While some of these fragrances on this list may be more woody, aromatic, or smoky than others, the scent of burning firewood creates that cozy fireplace feel that is so heavily featured in By the Fireplace.

This list features several well-formulated dupes that do a great job of capturing the essence of what By the Fireplace is all about. Some may be slightly sweeter than others, while a few of the fragrances feature much more subtle hints of smoke, making them good alternatives for those who enjoy By the Fireplace, but find too much smokiness a bit distracting.

Whether you’re looking for that perfect fragrance that features a similar vibe as By the Fireplace to enjoy for yourself or you’re shopping for someone else, you’re sure to find the right fragrance that suits your personality on this list. Let’s get started on my top ten list of similar perfumes and dupes for By the Fireplace.

10 Dupes of Replica By the Fireplace

1. Dossier Woody Chestnut

Woody Chestnut is a dupe created by Dossier and comes in as one of the most affordable fragrances on my list. Woody Chestnut opens up with bright notes of pink pepper, clove, and orange blossom before eventually maturing into smoky, woody notes. A comforting hint of chestnut lies close to the skin as it dries down into a soft vanilla base alongside subtle hints of cedarwood. This is a cozy fragrance that I think would be an excellent option to wear for holiday parties and cold winter nights. Woody Chestnut doesn’t last nearly as long as By the Fireplace in terms of longevity. However, a single reapplication should get you through your busy day. Woody Chestnut would work well as a layering scent, specifically when paired with an amber-based fragrance. To my nose, it is a bit more feminine than By the Fireplace. However, I think it would still work as a unisex fragrance if you enjoy lighter and slightly sweeter base notes.

2. Our Impression of Maison Margiela – Replica By the Fireplace

When it comes to dupes, Oil Perfumery tends to offer very inexpensive options for those shopping on a budget. While their dupes can often be hit or miss, it seems as though they did a great job recreating the essence of By the Fireplace. This fragrance opens up very similarly to the original. However, it does start off more smoky and less sweet. Cloves tend to overshadow other opening notes, although hints of pink pepper and sweet orange blossom do appear shortly after that. Instead of drying down into a smoky base, the smokiness carries through as it develops before finally revealing sweet vanilla notes which lie close to the skin. I do enjoy the rollerball format, as it is pretty helpful for discreet reapplication throughout the day. This fragrance doesn’t last as long as the original and will fade within just a few hours. However, I think it might be well worth the purchase if you can’t get your hands on the real deal.

3. Campfire Nights by Alexandria Fragrances

For an option that is slightly spicier and less woody, I suggest you check out Campfire Nights by Alexandra Fragrances. This perfume was launched in 2020 and was intended as a dupe of By the Fireplace. Upon first spray, I immediately notice a more mature, aged vanilla note that is much richer and less overtly sweet than in By the Fireplace. The smokiness is more subtle and tends to last throughout the day as sweet notes of orange blossom balance out the spiciness. Alexandria Fragrances did a fine job recreating the essence of By the Fireplace. Campfire Nights will carry you throughout the day without worrying about it fading away. I must note the sillage is higher than By the Fireplace, so I suggest you try this one out to ensure it works with your body chemistry.

4. Fireside Marshmallow by ALT.

Check out Fireside Marshmallow by ALT for a muskier take on By the Fireplace. To my nose, this dupe works quite well as a unisex fragrance due to the muted sweet vanilla tones and deep smokiness. I have to note that it is somewhat more synthetic than By the Fireplace. However, seeing that it is much less expensive than the original, that may be a quality you are willing to overlook. Fireside Marshmallow is somewhat one-dimensional in fragrance profile, and the clove and chestnut notes tend to take center stage. During specific points of the dry down process, I notice juniper hints that seem to appear and then quickly fade away again. This could work well as a layering fragrance if you wanted to pair it with something a little sweeter with notes of vanilla. Overall, I think Fireside Marshmallow is a decent alternative for those who enjoy the vibe of By the Fireplace and are looking for something less expensive.

5. Vanilla Silk by Gallagher Fragrances

While Vanilla Silk does feature quite a bit of sillage, it is worth trying if you’re looking for a fragrance with a very similar vibe to By the Fireplace. Depending on your individual body chemistry, you are either going to get a fragrance that is much sweeter than By the Fireplace or a nearly identical scent. When I sprayed it, I noticed a much more robust, sweet vanilla top note that carries much longer than By the Fireplace. To my nose, it is lighter than By the Fireplace, and the smokiness and musk are still quite apparent. However, they are not as overt and settle quite close on the skin. There are hints of bourbon that round this fragrance out and keep the vanilla from becoming too overbearingly sweet. While the price point is comparable to By the Fireplace, it may be worth trying if you’re looking for a fragrance with a different twist on very similar notes.

6. Drowning In Vanilla by The Dua Brand

Drowning in Vanilla earns a spot on my top ten list due to its uniquely formulated fragrance profile. This hybrid scent was created as a homage to By the Fireplace and Ani by Nishane, and I think it is a unique take on two trendy fragrances. If you’re looking for something more floral but still features bold smoky, and sweet notes, check out this fragrance. To my nose, Drowning in Vanilla features a much more floral opening with strong notes of Turkish rose, followed closely by soft herbal notes of ginger and cardamom before settling into a familiar base of amber and musk. This cozy scent is perfect for the winter, and it is unisex which makes it highly versatile. While it does open up somewhat medicinally, it quickly evolves and projects well as it moves through its fragrance accord. If you’re a fan of Ani by Nishane as well as By the Fireplace, then I suggest you check this fragrance out.

7. Velvet by Commodity

You should check out Velvet by Commodity for something sweeter with a floral twist. To my nose, Velvet is a sweeter and slightly tropical fragrance featuring top notes of fresh coconut, soft rose petals, and heliotrope before revealing a warm, vanilla heart. Throughout the dry down process, I do notice hints of clove that tend to reappear and fade away throughout the day before it finally settles into a warm, woody base. Velvet projects well and is an excellent fragrance to have in your collection if you’re looking for something with a similar vibe to By the Fireplace that is also somewhat sweeter. It’s a decent pick if you enjoy perfumes that feature notes of fragrant rose. I also think this would make for a suitable layering fragrance if you’re in the mood to enhance it with something slightly spicier or smoky from time to time.

8. Ameer Al Oudh Intense Oud by Lattafa Perfumes

For a sweeter take on By the Fireplace, I suggest you check out Ameer Al Oudh Intense Oud by Lattafa Perfumes. I detected sweet notes of toasted marshmallow as soon as I sprayed it, which makes for a very sweet opening to an otherwise smoky, spicy fragrance. These notes mingle with creamy vanilla before quickly moving through middle notes of smoky guaiac wood and chestnut. I noticed that these middle notes tend to stick around much longer than I initially thought they would, and they were still quite apparent as it settled into a herbal base. This fragrance is much sweeter than By the Fireplace, however, it balances out quite well with the smokier notes. One caveat to remember with Ameer Al Oudh Intense Oud is that it performs differently depending on where it is sprayed. When you just spray it on your clothes it will smell more smoky and spicy. However when it is sprayed directly on your skin you will notice a sweeter, and slightly more gourmand vibe that is more reminiscent of By the Fireplace. Overall, I think Ameer Al Oudh Intense Oud does a decent job of recreating the vibe of the original and is worth trying out.

9. Noir Exquis by L’Artisan Parfumeur

Noir Exquis by LArtisan Parfumeur
Noir Exquis by LArtisan Parfumeur

For a similar fragrance with a much more gourmand vibe I suggest trying out Noir Exquis by L’Artisan Parfumeur. Instead of featuring sweet vanilla notes right at first spray, I was surprised to detect a mix of citrus and chestnut. These notes unfold and reveal a warm, fragrant coffee note that lingers throughout the duration of wear. Sweet hints of sap and vanilla mingle with a woody base of ebony tree, tonka bean, and sandalwood, giving this fragrance a comforting, yet gourmand, feel. To my nose, this fragrance doesn’t smell nearly as smoky as some of the other perfumes on my list. However, this might be ideal if you aren’t a fan of too much smoke but enjoy the sweeter, more musky notes featured in By the Fireplace. It’s also one of the longer-lasting fragrances on this list, perfect if you intend to wear it for a long night out with friends.

10. Bonfire Bash by Bath & Body Works

Bonfire Bash by Bath and Body Works for women
Bonfire Bash by Bath and Body Works for women

If you’re looking for a much lighter version of By the Fireplace, check out Bonfire Bash by Bath & Body Works. This seasonal fragrance was released in the fall of 2018 and is a very soft, feminine fragrance that lacks the overtly smoky notes that By the Fireplace heavily features. It is soft and slightly musky, with notes of sweet vanilla bourbon that remain as it dries down into a creamy sandalwood base. While this fragrance isn’t exceptionally long-lasting, you can pair it with their heavily scented body lotion, increasing its longevity a bit longer. This fragrance is perfect if you’re looking for something that’s not going to project outward too much, and you could even consider layering it with something more powdery or smoky, depending on your mood.

On a Final Note

Finding the perfect dupe or fragrance that embodies the essence of By the Fireplace is easy if you keep a few things in mind. You need to look for a scent that carries some smokiness. While it doesn’t need to be too bold or overbearing, it is this smoky note that makes By the Fireplace so distinctive. You want to make sure the fragrance you choose settles into a soft musky base featuring cashmere or amber, as well as elements of aromatic balsam fir or other woody notes. There should also be some sweetness to the fragrance with hints of vanilla or orange blossom, but it doesn’t need to be too gourmand. By remembering these tips and including noteworthy dupes in your search you’re bound to find the right fragrance to add to your collection.
