Some people buy soap without much thought. It’s all too easy to head to the store and take whatever product you reach for first. But with organic brands like Dr. Squatch becoming more and more mainstream, the way we buy soap is destined to change.

Dr. Squatch makes an all-natural, highly-scented range of bar soaps designed for the eco-conscious modern man who cares for his skin. There are a number of rugged, masculine scents to choose from, leaving you in a bit of a bind.

Let me save you the hassle of having to try every one of the Dr. Squatch scents with my run down. I’ve tried each of the scents and am here to give an honest review to help you find the Dr. Squatch scent that perfectly matches your personality and mood.

Why I Go With Dr. Squatch

Dr. Squatch is the brainchild of Californian entrepreneur, Jack Haldrup who wanted to create an ethical and eco-friendly collection of men’s skincare products. The result was a company that’s now famous for its advertising campaign featuring Dr. Squatch himself aka actor, Mike Langsdale.

Yes, the TV commercials were enough to turn heads but the question remains why so many people, myself included, have ditched the shower gel and started using Dr. Squatch bar soap. I often get asked this question because Dr. Squatch is pretty pricey but I’d say it was worth it. Plus, the business model seems to be working since as of 2021, Dr. Squatch is estimated to be worth over $100 million.

One of the main reasons for the expense is that the brand only uses natural and organic ingredients. These are more expensive to source and this is reflected in the price. But you get what you pay for and those natural ingredients are highly beneficial for your skin.

How this works depends on which Dr. Squatch soap you buy. For example, some are filled with soothing ingredients like shea butter whereas others feature pumice to lightly exfoliate the skin while cleansing. I have sensitive skin and these bar soaps never cause flare-ups which is once again thanks to the organic ingredients.

I appreciate that Dr. Squatch is so eco-conscious. The brand doesn’t test on animals and most of the products are vegan. The company also uses recycled packaging for less of an impact on the planet.

Dr. Squatch feels like an exclusive and luxurious product but anyone can get their hands on these soaps. Not only are they available on the official Dr. Squatch website but I’ve also seen them featured in many subscription boxes such as Birchbox. Dr. Squatch also offers a subscription so you’ll never run out of your favorite soap and you can get 6 bars for $39 every quarter. You even get to choose your own scents. Of course, you can also pop down to Walmart or check out Amazon for the latest Dr. Squatch scents.

Using the range of Dr. Squatch bar soaps is something that instantly drew me in. Just wet the soap and lather it up for a luxury in-shower experience that’s bursting with scent. It’s no wonder that I and many other people are mad about this brand.

All Dr. Squatnacch Scents Ranked

1. Pine Tar

Pine Tar

Made using natural oils and real pine extract, Pine Tar is truly a breath of fresh air. Dr. Squatch describes this as having an Old Growth Forest scent and that is a perfect description.

Pine Tar has a fresh yet woody aroma and it’s so fragrant that I kept smelling the scent for hours after using the product. Plus, it felt really nice on my skin when it lathered up and the natural ingredients meant my sensitive skin did not flare up which some heavily fragranced soaps can cause.

Pine Tar is definitely one of the stronger smelling Dr. Squatch scents. It’s ideal for a hard-working guy that wants to feel bright and fresh all day.

Pros:

  • Long lasting scent
  • Kind to skin
  • Rich, creamy lather
  • Masculine fragrance

Cons:

  • The black color of the soap is messy and leaves marks on the tub or shower

2. Bay Rum

Bay Rum
Bay Rum

Spicy and warm with the fresh, tropical hit of orange; Bay Rum is one of my favorite Dr. Squatch soaps. It’s really refreshing when you’re showering and it left me feeling super clean and fresh for a long time after use.

OK, Bay Rum isn’t quite as potent as Pine Tar but it’s also a much classier scent, in my opinion. It kind of feels like a barbershop cologne to me and with the delicate yet noticeable trace of fragrance it leaves, you could use it in place of a cologne where a strong smell isn’t required.

This natural bar soap contains coconut oil which made my skin feel really soft and nourished. I’ve seen some people talking about how Bay Rum has cleared up problem skin and I’d guess this was because of the natural ingredients.

Pros:

  • Manly yet gentle aroma
  • Long lasting delicate scent
  • Feels fresh and clean
  • Kind to skin

Cons:

  • Not suitable if you want a very strong-smelling soap

3. Fresh Falls

Fresh Falls
Fresh Falls

From reading reviews, Fresh Falls seems to be one of the most popular Dr. Squatch scents and I can’t say I’m surprised. This one felt really clean and invigorating. Dr. Squatch describes this as a fresh forest waterfall and I can see where that analogy comes from. Stepping out of the shower, I felt revitalized.

The scent lasted a wonderfully long time and since this one contains Alaskan Glacier Mineral Clay, I found that it brought new life to my skin through detoxification.

As with Pine Tar bar soap, Fresh Falls leaves your washcloth a bit messy.

Pros:

  • Fresh and uplifting scent
  • Long lasting fragrance
  • Detoxifies the skin

Cons:

  • Dye makes the soap messy

4. Wood Barrel Bourbon

Wood Barrel Bourbon
Wood Barrel Bourbon

Using this made me feel really classy and refined. It feels like a very luxurious fragrance with spicy accords that give it warmth. It reminded me of the kinds of soaps you get in a high-end hotel and the scent went on and on.

What I liked about it is that Wood Barrel Bourbon is very noticeable but not overpowering once you’ve rinsed it off. It’s very manly but not in that fresh, invigorating way that a lot of gent’s scent can be.

Wood Barrel Bourbon is a medium grit soap that’ll exfoliate and smooth the skin and contains natural oils for nourished skin. It left my skin feeling really good although out of all the Dr. Squatch soaps, this one seems to last the least amount of time, according to reviews. Generally speaking, you only get a few weeks’ use out of it.

Pros:

  • Luxurious and manly scent
  • Smooths the skin
  • Fragrance lingers without being OTT

Cons:

  • Bar doesn’t last long
  • Not ideal if you like a very strong scent

5. Birchwood Breeze

Birchwood Breeze
Birchwood Breeze

I appreciate the neutral color of this soap and the scent is even better. This is one of the original Dr. Squatch scents and it’s quite invigorating and fresh. There’s a definite manly character to the soap but I’ve seen lots of women saying that they use Birchwood Breeze.

The scent of this one lasts a long time after showering and it’s pretty potent so, if you didn’t want to wear cologne, this would leave you with a nice scent.

I think another reason that Birchwood Breeze is so well-liked is how it makes the skin feel. It’s a medium grit with pumice and birch bark which I noticed made my skin feel very smooth and, dare I say it glows.

That said, there is something of a waxiness to Birchwood Breeze and I wasn’t so keen on how it felt as though there was a residue on my skin after rinsing.

Pros:

  • Very strong and pleasant scent
  • Great for men and women
  • Scent lasts for a long time
  • Exfoliates the skin

Cons:

  • Leaves a waxy coating on the skin

6. Coconut Castaway

Coconut Castaway
Coconut Castaway

There are two reasons why I enjoy using this soap. Firstly, it’s got a nice light grit that exfoliates my skin leaving it feeling soft and smooth. Plus, there’s coconut oil which is so nourishing. Secondly, the scent is fantastic. It’s got a kind of warm, creamy feel to it but still feels very fresh and clean.

Personally, I think that Coconut Castaway is an ideal summer soap and it’ll leave a delicate yet noticeable fragrance throughout the day. I’ve heard from many people that this is their favorite Dr. Squatch scent.

That said, the scent of Coconut Castaway is one of the gentler in the range. If you like something with a bit of a bang, this might not be right for you. However, for a relaxing shower, this is just the ticket.

Pros:

  • Enriched with coconut oil
  • Gently exfoliates
  • Soft scent
  • Long lasting fragrance

Cons:

  • Not ideal if you like a very strong smelling soap

7. Cool Fresh Aloe

Cool Fresh Aloe
Cool Fresh Aloe

I’ll level with you, I’m not generally a fan of aloe-scented products but I was curious to give Cool Fresh Aloe a fair trial. There was a very light, fresh scent that left me feeling clean. After using the soap, not only did the scent stick around gently but I found that it also made me smell nicer throughout the day when I had some transpiration going.

Cool Fresh Aloe contains coconut oil which is ideal for anyone with dry skin in need of a hydration boost. However, there’s no grit in this soap so don’t expect any exfoliation.

While the soap does an excellent job at lathering up and washing away dirt, like other soaps from the Dr. Squatch range, I found that a single bar doesn’t last all that long.

Pros:

  • Light, fresh fragrance
  • Long lasting scent
  • Great for dry skin (contains coconut oil)
  • Matching deodorant for scent layering

Cons:

  • This bar soap doesn’t contain any exfoliating ingredients

8. Gold Moss

Gold Moss
Gold Moss

You might compare this to Wood Barrel Bourbon only Gold Moss feels a little lighter. Still, it’s an exquisite rustic and woody smell that sticks really well. While I feel that this is masculine, I think it could be used as a unisex scent so might make a great family option.

I’ve heard a lot of people talking about how this is their top Dr. Squatch scent because of how natural Gold Moss smells. And I tent to agree. While it’s obvious, it’s not overbearing.

Gold Moss contains no grit so it’s not a good choice if you have dry skin that you wish to exfoliate. But the addition of shea butter does leave the skin feeling very smooth and hydrated.

Pros:

  • Good balance between being long-lasting and not too OTT
  • A great masculine fragrance
  • Hydrates the skin with shea butter

Cons:

  • Some people say this soap makes their skin feel a little oily

9. Deep Sea Goat’s Milk

Deep Sea Goats Milk
Deep Sea Goats Milk

Deep Sea Goat’s Milk is a popular choice among Dr. Squatch fans but I first have to warn you that this is one of the few Dr. Squatch soaps that contain animal byproducts. If you’re looking for a vegan-friendly soap – this isn’t it.

Moving onto the scent. Deep Sea Goat’s Milk has a fresh, smooth scent that feels typically clean. It’s not as strong or long-lasting as some of the other scents but that’s OK if you like something more gentle.

What really appealed to me about this one was how it works well for all skin types. Deep Sea Goat’s Milk contains shea butter for soothing nourishment as well as oatmeal for gentle exfoliation. If that wasn’t enough, there’s also kaolin clay which cleanses the skin of natural oils without drying it out.

Pros:

10. Cold Brew Cleanse

Cold Brew Cleanse
Cold Brew Cleanse

As a coffee lover, I eagerly awaited the opportunity to use this soap. Personally, I enjoy the rich, warm scent of coffee and brown sugar but I’ve heard others describe it as ‘just bearable’. If you’re not into warm, sweet scents then I’d avoid this one.

However, Cold Brew Cleanse is an excellent option for dry skin since it contains a heavy grit as well as skin-nourishing ingredients like shea butter.

I also value the fact that some of the profits from this one go to the Fire Department so you’re aiding a good cause every time you shower.

For me, Cold Brew Cleanse was one of the weakest smelling Dr. Squatch soaps which meant that the aroma didn’t last once I’d stepped out of the shower.

Pros:

  • Warm and pleasant scent
  • Great for very dry skin
  • Nourishes skin with shea butter
  • Profits donated to a good cause

Cons:

  • Not strong smelling
  • Coffee grit can be messy in the bathroom

11. Alpine Sage

I was interested in trying Alpine Sage because it is said to be a very fresh and masculine scent. Dr. Squatch describes it as a warm mountain breeze and I can see why. It’s not as in-your-face as something like Pine Tar but still has that natural, outdoorsy character that is very pleasant when showering in the morning.

Alpine Sage is an excellent choice for an aromatherapy shower since it contains calming cypress and sage oils as well as natural oils like lavender. The scent feels really relaxing.

In terms of performance, I found that this soap really got rid of any excess oil on my skin without drying it out and left it feeling smooth.

Pros:

  • Contains natural oils for a calming shower
  • Masculine scent
  • Removes oil and dirt without drying out the skin
  • Long lasting scent

Cons:

  • Not as strong as Pine Tar

12. Grapefruit IPA

Grapefruit IPA
Grapefruit IPA

Imagine combining the feeling of sipping a cold beer on the deck with enjoying a fresh shower. It seems that is what Dr. Squatch is trying to achieve with Grapefruit IPA and as strange as it sounds, it works.

Overall, I enjoyed my shower experience and while the soap doesn’t contain any grit, it still left my skin feeling nice and smooth. This is thanks to shea butter and beer which amazingly does hydrate the skin because the yeast helps to remove any dead skin cells – who knew.

However, I did notice that Grapefruit IPA was one of the soaps whose scent didn’t last long once out of the shower. If you like a strong smell, don’t buy it.

Pros:

  • Suitable for sensitive skin
  • Fresh, manly scent

Cons:

  • Smell doesn’t last long on the skin

13. Summer Citrus

Summer Citrus
Summer Citrus

Summer Citrus is one of the newer Dr. Squatch scents which replaces Cedar Citrus. Now that was a hugely popular scent so how does its successor measure up? Well, I enjoyed the fresh, zesty aroma that Summer Citrus filled my shower with. It’s very bright and contains lemon oil making Summer Citrus a natural-smelling soap.

The bar soap also contains pumice to create a light grit which keeps the skin free from dryness and the addition of shea butter gives your skin a vitamin boost. It’s perfect for sensitive skin and didn’t cause me any irritation.

After reading reviews, I have to agree with the notion that Summer Citrus is not the strongest or longest-lasting scent. However, the experience in the shower more than made up for this.

Pros:

  • Ideal as a morning shower scent
  • Bright and invigorating
  • Uses natural lemon oils and other skin-friendly ingredients
  • Leaves skin feeling soft and smooth

Cons:

  • Doesn’t have a very strong smell

14. Spearmint Basil

Spearmint Basil
Spearmint Basil

The final scent from Dr. Squatch and one that I was looking forward to trying is Spearmint Basil. It contains natural spearmint and peppermint oil for one of the most revitalizing Dr. Squatch soaps I’ve tried.

I found that using this during a morning shower to wake myself up worked wonders and the scent hung around for quite some time afterward. Although, I feel like Spearmint Basil could be a little too much for some people.

In terms of the skin, Spearmint Basil doesn’t offer any special qualities. It’s zero grit so no exfoliation although it did leave my skin feeling clean and soft.
