Coach marked its beginnings in 1941 as a family-run workshop called Gail Manufacturing Company,  on 34th Street in Manhattan, New York. The workshop had six leather artisans who made wallets and billfolds by hand. In 1946, Miles Cahn and his wife Lillian joined the company. Since the couple had previous experience in leather manufacturing and business, by 1950 they had already taken over the company. In 1961 Miles Cahn and Lillian bought Gail Manufacturing Company and named it Gail Leather Products.
